problem with Windows Messenger

When I set up my Windows Messenger, I went into options and then my preferences and unchecked the box for allowing me to be seen online every time I turn on the computer. At firsst about every three or four weeks I would have to go back to that page and check the box and then uncheck it again and then tab to okay because it was letting people see me online even though I hadn't gone into messenger and signed on. Now, I have to go through this every day. Even though the box is unchecked, I am still showing up as online to my contacts without actually signing on to messenger. This is irritating as sometimes I like to use the computer and not chat with people. Is there a way I can make sure this doesn't keep happening? Like I said, the checkbox is unchecked, but it still happens, so I have to check it and then uncheck it again. I would appreciate any help.

I don't know how to fix the problem (my solution was to get rid of Windows Messenger), but I do know that the same thing happened to me when I used it. It got annoying!

becky, do you mean that it is signing you in when you don't want it too? if that's what you mean then it could be that you are using outlook express. when ever you open outlook express it opens windows messenger regardless of how you have that box checked. what you have to do if this is the case is to go into the options in OE and in the general tab you'll find a check box that tells windows messenger to run everytime outlook express is opened. uncheck that and your problem should be solved.

sorry if i miss understood what you were saying and this isn't what you meant. good luck.

If your using windows outlook also, you can have the fore mentioned problem. There to you'll have to go to the options and uncheck the box letting windows messenger start up with outlook. Now I have the problem everytime the laptop starts so does messenger, but it doesn't sign me in. Just takes up space when it doesn't need to be there.

I use Outlook. But this doesn't happen every time. Up until recently, I could go several weeks without messenger signing me in automatically. But now it happens every day. So Bill, if you could be a bit more specific about what I should do in Outlook to change this I'd appreciate it.

Good day all. i deal with this on a regular basis and unfortunatley, it seems that Windows simply doesn't want to behaive. Harp, excellent suggestion about the outlook express checkbox and boy! I wish it would stay that way but I also have the problem although I uncheck that box in general preferences it just won't stay that way. Perhaps the solution is that once the machine is booted to open windows messenger and signoff manually I believe through the file menu. Man!!!! Windows is just becoming too intigrated. Get a Mac and all your problems will be over. Okay! you might have some new ones but trust me, there no ware near as difficult to solve.

hmmm, I would switch over to msn personally, and I don't understand how that box could recheck itself. I have it uncheckecd, and don't have a problem

The box doesn't recheck. It says that it is unchecked. So I check it and then uncheck it again and tab to okay again. I'm still not clear what to do in Outlook. I went to the options and looked at all the choices in the various tab pages but don't see what I'm supposed to check or uncheck there.
